When prepping to do this project, I talked with people about what was truly scary. What frightens and keeps people up at night? What creeps into nightmares, disturbs and terrifies? Some of the answers really surprised me. The post-WWII American classic fear of alien invasion only appeared once, and that was about an invading country conquering one's own. There were many responses about corporate destruction of the planet, which seems to be replacing the fear of nukes that once consumed us. They were usually related to the results of global climate changes and the destructive consumption of natural resources, but also branched out into toxins in the food and water. One related response struck me - birth defects and cancers caused by industry. Whoa, heavy stuff that we deal with every day. (Not surprisingly, this came from a man who worked in the plume of a corporate chemical spill.) Across the board there were some common fears. There were war, landmines, starvation, insects, spiders, old age and death, loss of senses like sight and hearing, madness, ghosts or the dead, religious and superstitious associated frights, assault, kidnapping, weapons like razors and knives, holocausts, nuclear holocaust, disease. Top of the list of these common fears was murder. That each of us has it in us to do such a thing is scary enough, but that it happens somewhere every day is unnerving, isn't it? Slasher movies must work on viewers' nerves, especially in violent countries. So, these are frightening things that tap into today's audience. Our collection of songs touches on many of those and still others, such as metempsychosis and paranoia. Also, I don't know about you, but the idea of surly undead rednecks scares the bejeeziz out of me! What about you? What does scare you? On behalf of all the people involved in this project, I hope you have a "frightening, damaging and disturbing" thrill ride with this music and ![]() katya oddio |
